Declare [14] : Our February Playlist
Yikes! Feb is here. Means we have to deal with the same old love songs all over again. Well, we must admit, some of those songs built some relationships, some songs made those existing stronger.
Me too, I caught myself sharing earpiece with a girl, singing our hearts out while we’re on our way to her province. Though it was my brother’s player, I am surprised that there’s so many (love) songs in it knowing he’s into metal. More surprisingly that my girl and I whole-heatedly can sing those word by word. Indeed, it made our journey something to cherish.
Three years passed and I’m still planning to do the same thing but this time, I will not borrow songs from my brother anymore. (thanks for having your player that time but I really hate metal. sorry bro. no offense hehe. )
I want to spice up the trip, I made a completely new playlist for her. I am confident that we’re into the same genre, hope she’ll like these songs

Declare [12] : Weekend Riot
I practically spent whole Sunday reading books and listening to morning rush podcast. Then suddenly, while listening in a Wednesday Riot edition of the podcast, I suddenly got an itch to download albums from some familiar artists. So weird that “When you say nothing at all” by Ronan Keating is constantly playing in my head. I don’t know why and how, I’m not in love that time..hmmm..must be the book I’m reading.
Well, I ended up downloading some compilation albums of Ronan Keating, Gavin DeGraw, and Michael Buble
the dude got so many good tunes. Most of them are ballads like “When you say nothing at all”, “when tomorrow never comes”, “I hope you dance” [which I think quite a homage for "dancing with my father'] and “Father and Son”. Those reminds me of the “Boyzone”.
I like his upbeat songs, I think it is good for some long out-of-town joyride, especially this one
last heard this one is way back highschool, and damn, having it on my playlist feels so good
and aside from that one, I’m also drawn on these two
well, even though this one is not as jumpy as the first three, I’m just intrigued with his version of this song. Does he nailed it? hmmm
that video reminds of “Obvious” of westlife. [wtf, my boyband preferences begins to show up. teehee... my bad, just missed my highschool day tunes badly. anyway...]
Aside from my fave “Home” and “Everything”, I heart this new jazzy tune from M.B. The music video is cute but M.B. as Justin Bieber? that’s quite disturbing, it hurt my eyes a little bit and until now, that image is still haunts me. Well, must appreciate thy music.
Gavin DeGraw reminds me of a college good friend [and yes Abby, that's you.] I think it’s becasue of the One Three Hill addiction of that girl.
Hmm. I guess I’m not use to hearing Beyonce [or other lads] belting out that much [unless it's Glee or showtunes] , I just like plain good ol’ music that will soothe my mind on a weekend. no complicated and angry tunes, no octaves…such a treat I must say.
So that’s for now guys.
So Till Then and Godbless
Declare [11] : Taste tests
One thing that keeps me busy when I’m preoccupied is scanning someone else playlist, whether someone posted a music video on their facebook wall or tweeting they had experienced LSS on a certain song. I’ll just click their link and listen to my heart if it’ll go straight to my freakin’ playlist. [sorry for the cheesy intro…I know right?
]
“Terrified” by Katharine McPhee ft. Zachary Levi
This song was first posted by my dear friend Abby on her FB wall and I fell inlove with it the time I pressed play. I love this song for several reasons. First, It’s my first time to hear my idol Chuck Bartowski [a.k.a Zachary Levi] to sing and with Katharine McPhee, so odd, so surreal. I can’t help myself to think of Chuck and Sarah, having a stake-out with this one on the background. If next season of Chuck will turn out to be a drama romance, this song fits the OST. Think about a song titled “terrified” for a series about spies and espionage. Great concept huh? Then the lyrics, boy, they’re great, credits to Kara DioGuardi and Jason Reeves for writing this song.
“Beside You” by Marianas Trench
I heard the whole EP of this band during an oyster stake-out in Jay’s place at Obando Bulacan. You can compare the band to Boys like girls and Panic at the disco but boy, they got this distinct style of music, you can’t easy categories them as scream or pop rock or whatever genre you have in mind. Josh Ramsay and the band got these good vocals, as a proof, try to listen to their recent album “Masterpiece feather” , one song caught my attention during that mentioned stake-out, remember how I love a capella right? Well, I heard “beside you” while eating oyster in a gloomy Sunday afternoon and god, the vocals and blending, I mistakenly asked Jay what A capella band it is. Well it turns out to be a rock band. I grabbed a copy of their album on my way home that day and it is worthy, I also shared this one to Shiela during our post production and she fell in love with the band that easy, specially to Josh Ramsay.
“King of Anything” by Sarah Bareilles
Love those piano tunes, those claps and arrangement of the song, it felt like listening to a fast paced tango music yet the lyrics are so dreamy. Anyway, I got this one by checking RX 93.1 countdown top seven update on their site. The video is so simple yet well executed, nice template of colors and visuals, such heaven and so relaxing for some tired eyes.
“Gravity” by Sarah Bareilles
Well, I don’t love or hate the song, I just love the concept of the video, on how they shot the whole MV guerilla style, no cuts, all rough yet well executed. I imagine their painstaking rehearsals and planning for this single shot MV. Notice how they recreate the galaxy. So nice. Got this one when I scanned through the artist discography
“Sideways” by Sam Isaac
Remember his song “Bears” that made it’s way to the Chuck series? Well, I found a lot melancholy than that, and that’s sideway, It’s so nice to watch a time lapse video that got this feeling of tranquility; I wondered how many cakes are used in this vid, well, I don’t care to count.
“Be my only” by FM Radio
Heard during Hilda’s wedding on one of Ugly Betty’s last 2 episodes. I fell in love with this song when it was played during the montage made showing the Hilda’s bridal entourage. I posted this one on my wall, and Neil fell inlove to this one as well, too bad, they don’t have any decent copy on the net as well on the iTunes because no one cares to produce and distribute them, what a shame for those producers.
“Top 40 violin mashup” by Paul Dateh
This guy was mentioned in a Creative Dork’s blog entitled “Asian-American Acoustic Awesomeness” , out of curiosity, I checked this guys youtube channel and he’s freakin’ talented, he can sing, rearrange and play that violin to the extent that he can pluck it’s strings while fiddling it. This act is one of my faves.
Speaking of Mash-up, I would like to end the post with another mash-up mentioned over Engr. Moks blogsite [mokong2007.blogspot.com], “United State of Pop 2009 (Blame It on the Pop) – Mashup of Top 25 Billboard Hits“ by dr Earworm. Listen and let the title tell you the whole story.
Well that’s for now…
So Till then and Godspeed
Declare [10] : beekeeping easy listening
well, even though I love Kesha, it doesn’t mean I’d go for Gaga. Sorry, but she’s not my thing. Well it happens that Kesha got some party tunes I used to love since Daft Punk, Moony and MashUp king, Norwegian Recycling. But aside from those tunes, I love female acts that got some nice song in their repertoire, full of meaning and nice vocals [forget auto-tune]. Some of them are not as popular as Lady gaga, Britney and Xtina, but still they managed to survived years with their very satisfying music. it is because their music created a strong fanbase on a certain genre o group, also their songs being heard as part of underground music industry made them featured on several TV series as music bed or episode soundtrack. And I’m not saying Gaga’s songs are nonsense dance tunes, I’d rather describe them as too much loud and sell out, too common, well that’s only opinion.
Well, I like to share some infamous female tunes that I’m sure you’ll like.
from KT Tunstall’s 2006 album “Eye to the Telescope”, “Other side of the world” is a sweet love ballad. it’s a good treat for those who misses their better half, or whose involve in a long distance relationship or those who tried to reminisce their past relationship and their exes. Nice video as well..it reminds me of daniel Powter’s “bad day” though. By the way, try to check the A capella version of this song, done by Maryland Faux Paz as part of Best of Collegiate Acapella 2008 edition
Her songs are inspiring, Tori Amos got this set of songs that tackles gender equality, hope and faith on certain things and empowerment against specific fears. Tori Amos’ got a huge variety of unique [emphasize on unique] easy listening tunes, but the songs I most likely to listen on her repertoire are “A sorta fairytale” and “Sleeping with butterflies”. Also those songs got interesting music videos too.
“Sleeps With Butterflies” is The Beekeeper‘s most popular song, and I find that it is most deserving of that distinction. It is a sweeping ballad with a simple, precious melody, and most importantly, it features the type of completely honest, unique lyrics I love hearing from Tori. “I’m not like the girls that you’ve known, but I believe I’m worth coming home to,” she notes coyly. Though “Sleeps With Butterflies” does not necessarily have a strikingly unique arrangement, it’s totally enjoyable
I think she is not a stranger on our Philippine air waves, we got some of her early tunes played on various radio stations. If my memory serves me right, I first heard her “Just another day” way back second year highschool. Some radio stations catered on Class A and B, got her songs on her playlist, yet she’s not that big here in our country. I got her discography on my player and I must say, It defined easy listening, good for relaxation and sorts. Even though her songs got a strong message, I’m sure you’ll not have a problem listening on them because they we’re presented very lightly. I also love her ballads that dominated her catalog. So unique, so light, speaking of ballad, check out her song “Nevermind me”.
Even though we don’t see her much nowadays, Mandy still can sing. She got very sweet nice songs from various very good song writers. Her breathy voice is the one I love the most. It so enticing. Even though her co-popstars like Brit and Xtina still got their claws on pop limelight, mandy is contented to go underground, support songwriters in their endeavors and very active on many advocacy campaigns. It is also nice of her to visit the Philippines most often for various event, talking about really appreciating your fans. Well, I think her last movie is “SAVED”, but dont worry no more, I learned that she’ll have a movie project with Disney, this time, as a voice of Rapunzel, if you’re asking why I know such info? Well, as a certified Chuck geek, our spy Agent Carmicheal [Zachary Levi] will be her partner as the prince charming
.
She got many songs featured in the TV series “SCRUBS” , her song is most likely to lead Avril Lavigne’s genre, type of music. Her music is refreshing and full off kick-ass old school electroguitar tunes.
To add, I also love Katy Perry, this gal got all the quality of a hot female act, she got hot body, songwriting prowess, intelligent and this lad can sing and hit high tunes, can do high raging vocals and party tunes. i think she can sing any kind of genre and sell it with glam and one of a kind brand…[talk about russel brand, well.]. She’s one of my crush and subject of some of my daydream dates
So there you go, try to check out some of these tunes, you might need them while you’re on a relaxation getaway someday or just want to hear some not-so-loud songs and uncommon tunes.
Well that’s for now…
So Till then and Godspeed
Declare [9] : Pinching half of my heart
“Pinch me” comforts me almost everyday during my highschool years, the message and irony embedded about enjoying time (and not being a bum) . Also making my realizations about things like college, time and love, go easy. No worries about life.
[Bathroom sessions series : acoustic versions of BNL faves by its very own Steven Page, well can't find the original on Youtube anymore, and I am just curious that Steven lost a lot of weight between the time the music video came out and at the time of this recording...there's also a round abouts that he is sick..is that true? sad. ]
I only got a chance to heard tunes from BNL by Yahoo! Music, it introduced me to “One Week”, “Be my Yoko Ono” and “Another Postcard”, MTV on the other hand made hooked on BNL’s “Testing 1 2 3″
BNL is one of my fave bands, (next to Dave Matthews Band—I’ll post their music next time) I salute them for their different kind approach to rock/alternative music and for their light-hearted and comedic performance style. The band’s trademarks at live shows are humorous banter between songs and improvised raps/songs, both of which are staples at virtually every concert.
Anyway, I got a copy of BNL’s complete discography last week, almost 7 years after my first encounter with “Pinch Me”. I immediately scanned the whole collection and got amazed by the these songs. I can’t believe it took me 7 years just to listen to their songs completely, also can’t believe that I missed 7 years listening to them.

(sorry can’t find the album, cover art of “BNL are men” in photobucket…)
A track from “BNL are men” album got my attention, fell in love with it and can’t stop to listen to it during my last weekend trip. it’s “Half a Heart”, an adult contemporary ballad with weird lyrics (clear and simple haiku like poetry) and light guitar strums, drumbeats and soothing orchestrations. this song wants to share it’s listener about a man’s search for his love, seeking for everyone’s help to accompany him to seek his girl before time ends, before the girl lost his patience or before one of them dies…
A sad song of sudden realization but hey, this song deserves a space on your iPod…
well, here’s the lyrics, enjoy the song…
Drunk On Wine, I’m Amazing
Bitter Pill; It’s My Raising
News At Five And At Midnight
Caught On Tape; Serves Me Right
The Crowd Around Me Starts To Grow
I Can Feel The Undertow
Anyone With A Half A Heart Would Help Me Out
Before They Ever Let The Other Half Find Out
But If They Could See How Far I’ve Let You Down
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Let Me Drown
Flashing Lights Couldn’t Warn Her
Paint Myself In A Corner
Bracing Now For The Impact
Losing Hope, Keeping Track
Standing On A Crumbling Wall
Tethered To A Cannonball
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Help Me Out
Before They Ever Let The Other Half Find Out
But If They Could See How High I’ve Built This Wall
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Let Me Fall
In The Space Between Sleep And Sleeplessness
We Redress All Our Wounds
If We Replace All This Hopeless Hopelessness
Then We Could Rest
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Let Me Drown
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Pull Me Down
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Let Me Fall
Anyone With Half A Heart Wouldn’t Care At All
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Help Me Out
Before They Ever Let The Other Half Find Out
But If They Could See How Far I’ve Let You Down
Anyone With Half A Heart Would Let Me Drown

Declare [8] : Walking in Memphis
I first heard this song because of my hunger for A capella music in my college years, (just graduated last year) , the first version I heard is by Blue Jupiter, and after my MP4 was reformatted, it was replaced by Rockapella’s.
After a year, I heard dave matthew’s band version.
I got interested deeply to this song, I don’t know who originally sang it but I think whoever he/she is, it got my heart throuh the melody and lyrics, the songs cradles me in every note, it never made me fell asleep but helps me reckon some of mistakes from the past, remember people i met before and those who i think i’ll never meet again. But there’s a lot more meaning on this song. It’s either personal, song’s poetry can be understood in different spectrum of understanding or in general, A songwriter’s story about the place.
my questions was answered when it came crossed to me the idea to search for teh real artist who composed and gave birth to the song. the net gave me three choices, lonestar, Cher and Mark Cohn, I hit the button again hoping that my questions will be answered. Youtube gave me Mark Cohn.
I also learned that many has their own version of this infamous song. ( like gavin deGraw, Chaka Khan (urghh…ang chaka),Matt Nathanson, Howie Day, Barry Diamond (I don’t know who the heck he is..) Shut Up and Dance (Britain) Wouter de Clerck, (2nd season runner up of Bulgarian Idol, “Idool”) Master Blaster (German Band–spring awakening? hehehehe) Tom Jones (? WTF!) and Eli Mattson (from America’s got Talent)…the web offered me everything…sheezz…anyway, I uploaded my fave picks…please do comment which version is best for you. If you like a cover of this song that wasn’t including in the lsit please feel free to jot it on my comments space. I’ll upload them for you.
here’s the lyrics
Walking In Memphis lyrics
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy — won’t you look down over me
Cause I got a first class ticket
But I’m as blue as a boy can be
Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of the Beale
Walking in Memphis
Do I really feel the way I feel
Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered ’round his tomb
But there’s a pretty little thing
Waiting on the King
Down in the Jungle Room
They’ve got catfish on the table
They’ve got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven’t got a prayer
But you got a prayer in Memphis
Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would –
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
And she said –
“Tell me are you a Christian child?”
And I said “Ma’am I am tonight”
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
AMAZING FACTS ABOUT THE SONG (just in case hehehehe)
This was the first single for Cohn, who was discovered by Carly Simon. He won the 1991 Grammy for Best New Artist.
Cohn wrote this after seeing an Al Green sermon in Memphis. It is a journey to be baptized in the world of Blues music. Cohn said it is about “Spiritual Awakening.”
“Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale” refers to Beale Street, an actual street in Memphis. Riley B. King became known as the “Beale Street Blues Boy” shortly after he first arrived in Memphis. Later, the nickname was shortened to B.B., the rest is history.
The sounds at the beginning of the song are meant to indicate falling rain.
The line, “Muriel plays piano every Friday at The Hollywood” is a reference to a local artist who played at the Hollywood Cafe, which is a small diner/music joint in Tunica County, Mississippi. Muriel has passed away, but The Hollywood is still there – you drive right past it to go to several of the casinos now located in Tunica.
W.C. Handy, who Cohn refers to in the first verse, is a blues legend. His most famous recording is “St. Louis Blues,” but he also recorded “Beale Street Blues” and “Memphis Blues.” There is a statue in his honor in Memphis.
W.C. Handy was born in Florence, Alabama. Florence, along with Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals, is part of this quad cities group usually referred to as “The Shoals” (as immortalized in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”… ‘the Shoals have got the Swampers’). There is a huge festival that takes place every August in the Shoals that honors WC Handy. It is aptly named The WC Handy Festival, and almost everybody, from churches to bars, and even the public library, hosts programs containing Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Funk, and Rock and Roll.
The reference to “Blue Suede Shoes” is not about Elvis Presley, but about Carl Perkins, who recorded the song in Memphis for Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Perkins’ ill-luck in a car wreck stopped him from touring to promote the record, allowing Elvis’ cover version to become a massive hit. Presley’s copy was recorded at RCA studios in Nashville.
The narrator tells of seeing “The ghost of Elvis up on Union Avenue and followed him up to gates of Graceland.” Sam Phillips’ studios were called “Memphis Recording Service” and were at 706 Union Avenue. Elvis’ start on the journey to fame and fortune (i.e. Graceland) is usually attributed to the success of “Blues Suede Shoes” – and that of “Heartbreak Hotel.”
“Security didn’t see him” is probably a comment on the story that Bruce Springsteen once successfully scaled the wall at Graceland, trying to deliver a song he wrote. Apparently, Elvis wasn’t there.
“There’s catfish on table and gospel in the air” marks the dichotomy between secular and sacred. Catfish is the standard Blues metaphor for sexual intercourse. (The word is also interchangeable with the slang expression for the female sex zones). “Catfish” thus would appeal to the bodily instincts, whereas “gospel” would be to the intellect. The metaphor gains more credence since Al Green supposedly renounced secular music after being scalded with grits by a jealous girlfriend.
The lyrics refer to the girl waiting in the Jungle Room. This was the name of the play area at Elvis’ Graceland mansion where he and the crew would take care of business
Cher recorded this for her 1995 album It’s a Man’s World, and released it as a single in the UK, where it hit #11. In her version, Gabriel plays the piano instead of Muriel. It was used in the season 5 episode of The X Files called “The Post-Modern Prometheus,” which was the only black and white episode of the show.
Well that’s for now…
So Till then and Godspeed
Declare [7] : Post of some mad hope
From the guy who sang/wrote some of my favorite tunes such as “I saw” , “Then I’ll be smiling”, “weight of it all” , “heartbreak world” and “All we are”, Matt Nathanson’s independent music revolves around “peace, struggle, faith and human’s inner endeavor in finding clarity in his everyday life”. sometimes I use some lyrics of his songs as an advice when I’m dealing with some problems.

(lyrics of one of my faves : heartbreak world)
Some of guitar arrangements are one of a kind, varies from easy listening up to head banging tunes. His first single here in the Philippines was “Come on get higher”, and if my memory serves me right, it was launched in Jam 88.3 fm last year, I think, sometime in July or August.
Good thing I got a chance to have two of his albums “Some Mad Hope” and “Beneath these fireworks”.
I think someone would give him a chance to distribute his albums more widely because his music are already mature for the genre like Teitur, Jamie Scott and the Town, Just Jack and Howie Day.
Sadly Philippines only heard his “Come on get higher”, even though it got some votes in airplay, a successor was not been played. So some thinks he’s one of those “one hit wonder” artists. But the truth is, he’s one of those artist that’s too busy touring the US, too busy to make another album.
well, for further reference (naks!) here’s some info about him and his works. (check out if you heard some of his songs featured in your favorite TV show episode)
(by the way, if you have his first four albums, please let me know, share it to the world! hehehehe

Declare [6] : After a long Hiatus
At last, I just got back from the wild [figuratively speaking] , sorry if I wasn’t able to post anything here due to some reasons: I’m too busy grabbing more time to sleep, since my shift normally starts with 12 midnight. Also I just got into some various video editing engagements, the most recent is an audio-video presentation for the College of Languages and Linguistics of Polytechnic University of the Philippines. And lastly, I’m dealing with several heartburns lately, which I think is alarming.
So before I go back to regular posting of various contents about my life, i would like to share this modern day classic as my introduction, my comeback after a long hiatus
It’s the song called “In the House of Stone and Light” by Martin Page. I discovered this song while scanning my newly arrived collection of Best of Collegiate Acapella CDs. I first heard the acapella arrangement by a college acapella group, The Brown Derbies. I got curious about the chorus of the song also the unique musicality of the arrangement did for the the song. it made me land again on youtube to search for the original version of the song. As expected it never failed me, thus I found this video
The original song is same marvelous as the Acapella version. I found the song somehow spiritually charged. my curiousity made me look for another spec of this infamous classic:
According to Answers.com :
“In the House of Stone and Light” was the title of a hit song by British musician Martin Page. The song was released in July 1994 from the album of the same name. The song was a number 14 hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in 1995and reached number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
The title references the Grand Canyon in the state of Arizona in the U.S. Contained within the lyrics are references to Native American peoples and their customs and traditions. The song chronicles the spiritual and physical journey of an unenlightened man as he struggles to become enlightened.
Complete with rich textures, soulful melodies and tribal rhythms, In The House Of Stone and Light – the award-winning chart topper that broke records in the Billboard charts – has been called
In the video of the original song, you might notices of some familiar singers collaborating as musicians on this particular piece. Musical guests include Phil Collins, Robbie Robertson, Paul Moore (The Blue Nile)-keyboards, Geoffrey Oryema-vocals, Brenda Russell-vocals, Jimmy Copley (Tears For Fears, Jeff Beck)-Drums, Neil Taylor (Robbie Williams, Tears For Fears)-Guitar and Bill Dillon (Robbie Robertson, Daniel Lanois, Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan)-Guitars.
Hailing from England, Martin Page was celebrated for writing a string of Pop Hits for other artists in the 80′s, namely, THESE DREAMS (Heart), WE BUILT THIS CITY (Starship), KING OF WISHFUL THINKING and FAITHFUL (Go West), FALLEN ANGEL (Robbie Robertson) and DANCING IN HEAVEN (for his own band Q-Feel). Page’s songs have also been recorded by Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, The Commodores, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Josh Groban, Bryan Ferry, Paul Young, Lee Ritenour, John Waite, Tina Arena, James Ingram & Carnie Phillips, Kim Carnes,Three Graces and more.
Well that explains the track, please do try to check on this one, and if you have time [and spare money] try to look for a Best of College Acapella CD , School year 1998 in particular, if you want to check out the acapella version of the same song
Well that’s for now…
So Till then and Godspeed
Declare [5] : to LeRoi, the GrooGrux King
“And this year’s Grammy Album of the year goes to “Fealess” Taylor Swift.”
Congrats to Taylor Swift for having that album at young age. She deserves it. But honestly speaking, I’m not a big fan of your music, still I’m amused on how your music entertain people, how your song become the voice of a certain generation. You had a good fight with Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, that Lady gaga and my idols, Dave Matthews Band.
I have nothing against with it but I read some tread before the Grammy Awards, it’s about the nominees and who should have won and who will cerainly /obviously will be picked by the named award giving body.
They’re telling that all of the albums/artists nominated in the Album of the year category, Dave Matthews Band’s ‘Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King’ is unlikely to win for the reason they haven’t heard on it, wasn’t able to land on their iPod and because DMB is only opted by the older generation. I also cringed when I read in one of the thread that “even though it’s evidently Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Swift had the year’s most successful records and they truly provided the soundtrack to 2009. One of them would be the obvious choice — but the Grammys don’t do obvious. Instead, Grammy voters tend to go for the veterans and the sentimental favorite — and that is the DMB.”
Hello, FYI, DMB have a great fan base and their music is one of a kind, artistically done and full of poetry, well, you might take it againts me, you might think I’m exerting to much effort in buying out others’ take on the nominees but as a DMB fan, thread like those hurts me a lot.
I completed their discography and also got some bootlegs of their live performances. DMB never fails there audiences to have a fantastic ear-gasm. And whenever there’s a buzz of an upcoming DMB album, Fans are having a hard time to set their expectations low.
Dave Matthews Band’s ‘Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King’ is their first album after four years and has a darker, heavier sound than previous records, but casual observers might have difficulty distinguishing this new album from the band’s already well-established aesthetic, for better or worse.
The sad part of making this album is the death of their longtime saxophonist, LeRoi Moore which died in an ATV accident. Still DMB was able to collect them selves and continue the album. ‘Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King’ was opened by 1:11 minutes of Sax instrumental by the great LeRoi. The cut made introduction to the song “Shake me like a monkey” where the music foreplay begins.
My fave cuts on the album are : “Dive in” because it’s to homey, “Seven” , “Why Am I” a story about celebrating life in order to get over personal pain. and “You and Me”
But the touching cut of the album is “Lying in the Hands of God” , where a tribute to LeRoi was made, In an MTV News interview, main songwriter, Dave Matthews told DMB fans
“There was one song called ‘Lying in the Hands of God’ that I wrote the words over the piece, [over] the constructed song that we made,” he said. “I wrote the words and the chorus and all the stuff, and then played it back and it was a duet! It was already there, ‘Roi playing along. And it was bizarre, because we hadn’t really turned the sax up, then we did, and there it was. He was playing along the whole time.”
Well, too much for my side, I don’t expect everybody DMB, but I recommend you to try to listen to other genres available once in awhile, it might open your mind to some good tunes and priceless poetry. So till then, Godspeed and Peace out.
[Pahabol : No offense, but I noticed that DMB is more known to college studes or grads, they have this kind of market far way different to mainstream or on that matter Pop music-- They're commonly categorized as adult contemporary like Train. Pop songs do rocks to the younger generation, but the evil me says that People who only values pop music and RnB music are those who never landed on a state to appreciate great and such high valuable music, some tried but they ended up rejecting the art and go back to some easy pop tunes
, well, that's only my reaction

Declare [4] : Operation Awesome
Chuck’ Season 3 Episode 4 is amazing, It’s an opportunity to see Chuck stand by his own, well not literally at least he took the lead to capture some operatives from the Ring just to save Awesome’s Identity. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, please do check the TV series Chuck at NBC, it’s their 3rd season already and we in the Nerd Herds are hoping for more season to come after this. Writers of that show really rocks—hope it’ll get an Emmy this year.
Moving forward, the last 3 minutes of episode 4 is very touchy, first; Morgan is able to learn how to gain respect, second; the dinner planned by Morgan , where in our fave couple exchanged some eye contact and understanding and third, the song they used..yup..the song..it caught my attention when the show started playing the song’s intro all the way ’till the show ended. One of the reason why I’m a fan of this show because this series has really stayed trued to having great choice in music. So far, I discovered some artist by merely hearing their tracks on some TV series. that’s why almost nobody knows any song on my player. [sad part is i don't have someone to share this music..well there's my best pal, Galax, who liked Eric Hutchinson's album]
So as soon I got a chance, I checked this wordpress account from a Chcuk fanatic also, I always expect his blog to have first updates when it comes to Chuck soundtrack, way to go sir. and I discovered It is entitled “Bears” by a an acoustic singer-songwriter originally from Malvern, UK, named Sam Isaac.
I huddled with youtube for music video, unfortunately there is none. I just contented myself through LPs, anyway, I’m checking his album through iTunes and so far its great, so there you go, I’ll leave you with a review from “There Goes the Fear” and quote:
Sam Isaac is an acoustic singer-songwriter originally from Malvern. Following his decision to pack-up and move to London in 2006 however, Sam was soon picked up by Back2Forward Records and went on to release his debut E.P, ‘Compass Scattered Love’. To coincide with the release, Sam went on a tour across the UK – yet this was no ordinary tour, oh no! Unlike most upcoming bands, Sam didn’t choose to visit your regular bog-standard club, but instead decided to set-up stage in a selection of lucky fans’ living rooms across the country. While this tour-ethic was undeniably cool, Sam has certainly come a long way since then, playing slots at Glastonbury and BBC’s Electric Proms along the way. He already has NME and a selection of top Radio 1 DJs on his side. He’s been described as “beautiful!”, “fantastic!” and “very special!”, therefore I was unsurprisingly looking forward to delving into ‘Bears’, Isaac’s debut album, released in June.Well, merrily delve I did and boy is this record one big bundle of irresistibly cute indie-pop fun (think The Wombats unplugged, oh and minus the witty lyrics)!
The album kicks off with title-track ‘Bears’, a sweet little acoustic number backed up by a a gently twinkling synth which echoes the similarly starry lyrics “and all along the front of the stage/there’ll be fairy lights/as bright as any city night”.
‘Bears’ then proceeds to pick up pace a little with the cheery chorus of ‘Come Back Home Tonight’, and the general indie gem that is ‘Fire, Fire’. Meanwhile, track four, ‘Sticker, Star and Tape’ (Isaac’s top listened to song on Last.Fm) makes further use of sunny electronic riffs which thoroughly compliment Sam’s super sweet lyrics – “some boys get broke and try and make/a mend with pens and masking tape!”.
I’ll post my review once i finished listening to the whole EP, so bye for now, Godspeed and have a nice day
Declare [3] : The man who would be Santa
I know it’s not yet my father’s birthday [btw: February 14] neither father’s day but I feel like sharing this song. It’s “The Man Who Would Be Santa” by Vertical Horizon, came from their 1995 album , “Running on Ice”.
You might think it’s a Christmas song because of the title but no. It’s about something else [on that matter--someone] This Little known contemporary ballad is a heartwarming song, not to mention, I can’t avoid myself imagining my dad and miss him, by only listening to this song. Actually, I don’t know that this song ever existed until I searched for a copy of the band’s “Heart in Hand”.
The song have this quality of easy listening, very soft but simply it can hit you big time. It is so powerful, the first time I heard this song, my heart melt and suddenly missed my dad. Even though I have no idea what the lyrics are, that I don’t know them by word, or by letter, still, I know from the first time it played on my room’s speakers, that this song is a tribute for fathers.
check out the lyrics, and if you feel like singing it, go ahead… [much better, sing this song with your father
]
“The Man Who Would Be Santa”
And the man who would be Santa slips into the room
And the hour of daylight’s yet to come but he hopes they don’t wake too soon
All the presents wrapped in paper and tied with a bow
The children sleep upstairs and Santa works below
And he can hear the children dreaming
[Chorus]
And he says
All I want is for you to have
A life you love and live
Take from me all I have to give
Because you are in my heart
And the man who would be Santa tells his son to write
And to call him if he needs him in the middle of the night
Don’t you worry don’t you cry now you’ll do just fine
Your mother and I love you
We think about you all the time
And he can see the train is leaving
[Chorus]
Now the old man sits and tells of days when time stood still
The hours always seem to fade but the memory never will
All the love that you gave me
All the dreams in the night
And I just want to thank you while the day’s still light
But I can see the sun is setting
[Chorus]
The second stanza totally made me shed tears at time [well not physically, but emotionally---you'll figure out what I'm trying to say
, as expected, I ended up playing this piece over and over while my exam yesterday ]. Fathers do everything for us, they are our last resort when everyone is against us and still our mothers nag us to death [figuratively
]. Kumbaga kunsistidor. And sadly at times, sons and daughters tend to reject, misunderstand or ignore those efforts. Fathers only expect gratitude, a hug and willingness to give their slippers every time they got home from work, all they want is to have some good memories with their children.
So there you go, If you got a chance, hug your father or if not, even though he’s not used to it, send him a text [sms] about how grateful you are that he’s your father
. Godspeed to all and Have a nice day.
Declare [2] : Chuck me Betty in [500] days
At last, I got a chance to go back to my routine, Scribbling lay-out ideas while watching my downloaded TV series. Yep, I know Torrent is kinda illegal but let’s face it guys, Internet and downloading made vast media available to us, whenever and wherever we might be. Okay, before I got carried away by that topic and discuss some Communication Theories, I’ll just want to share with you some of the TV soundtrack that caught my attention and ended up playing endlessly in my Winamp.
Let’s start with “CHUCK”, I’m a die-hard fan [and geek] of this series. I have a dream of being the next Chuck Bartowski, and because of that I ended up renovating my room into some “Chuck” wall of fame, my wall is covered with Chuck posters [also with some logos from the series, like Fulcrum logo, Nerd Herd, Subway, Orange Yogurt, Winnielicious and others] Just in case you don’t know the series, you may check NBC for their “Chuck me” Mondays and Tuesday marathon. One of the reasons why I like “Chuck” is the way they choose soundtracks, which I agree that conveys more inner “Kakulitan” or nursed emotions of the whole scene. For example, Episode 7 season 1 used Oasis’ “Don’t look back in Anger” while Chuck pays a bitter homage to his Alma Matter.
I watched the last episode of season 2, it made me cry a bit because of the turning points being presented which will lead more complex storyline for the series’ season 3 comeback in March 2010. And one of my fave scenes on that EP is when Ellie is doing her wedding march in a beachside aisle in the tune of “Christmas TV” by the Slow Club. It’s an absurd choice for a wedding march but once you listened to the lyrics very well, you’ll not hear a couple do their wishes for each other but an testimonial on how arguments kept their relationship stronger, how scars and love correlate to each other
Moving on, one of my guilty pleasures is watching Ugly Betty regularly, I see to it that I got it’s F.U.S.E every week. I know it’s too tacky for a guy like me to watch those kind of shows, but hey, that series rocks, writers made all characters “round”, making them available for each other, whether to ruin each others lives or to be each others allies for some reasons. I think that’s they reason why the series survived the cut and got it’s vote for another season. Also I do love their visual effects, specially the transitions they used to stitch sequences together. It looks like the asst. director made some storyboard before each shoot to enable the post to do some remarkable VFX transitions. Anyway, the series introduced me to many interesting soundtracks, which I think I can use as a score for my personal projects in the Future. Season 3 featured Adel’s tracks as one of the flagship score of that season. Even though I like what Adel made for the series [note; not to mention her cameo role in Daniel and Molly’s planetarium wedding], I tend to like more those indie rock acts used. One of them is Val Emmich’s “The Only One lonely”. Val got a role in the series for almost 5 episodes as the indie rockstar neighbor of Betty. He sang that song in an EP. where Betty checked his gig. The song suddenly struck me with guilt, it made me resort some effort searching for its title and lastly, it’s vid.
In one of their episodes, “Tornado girl”, Ugly Betty packed up the episode by using a montage created by post prod, the whole ending is so ironic. While Betty is happy because she gained her reputation back, Marc on the other hand comes clean to Betty about what he did that night at the rooftop party when he slept with another man, prompting Betty to tell Marc to do the right thing. Marc later admits to Cliff he crashed the car, and tells him about the one-night stand. Cliff walks away crying, unable to forgive Marc for what he did. The whole thing was scored by The Panics’ “Don’t Fight it”. The score made the whole extro focus on Cliff’s search for empathy.
To cap off this entry, I would like you to check this amazing vid. It’s the other version of the music video of She and Him’s “Why you don’t let me stay here”. Also known as the Bank Dance, this video in particular served as a MV teaser for the film [500] days of summer. Even though it’s a part of the movie’s OST, you won’t be hearing this anywhere in the film. I only got a chance to hear it on MTV.
The whole video is so remarkable from the sleek cinematography up to how cute Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey strut their stuff in this exclusive look at their bank heist/movie musical homage. By the way Zooey is part of the duo who originally sang this track years ago, she starred in “Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy”, “Brigde to terabithia” and as Mark Walberg’s lead actress in “The happening”. She’s one of my ultimate crush
Well that’s for now…
So Till then and Godspeed
DECLARE [1] : Dave Matthews band “Busted Stuff”
I love listening to a random playlist, like an adventure, you don’t know where you’ll be heading, or on that matter, you don’t have any idea what would be the next song.
Last week while doing some sequences for my “script”, my player landed on a Dave Matthews Band classic [DMB] , “Crash into me”. The tune made me froze for a couple of seconds and as the intro of strumming guitar and melancholioc drumbeat echoed in my room, my heart begins to regain it’s life very slowly. Just like an unexpected heartburn, it made me broke to tears. Not because I remembered something out of this song, but actually because I missed the song so much, I think it took my Winamp several months to slate this song again.
I love DMB way back highschool. I remember sending request to my favorite FM station every Sunday just to play those two songs, “Crash into me” and “Where are you going.” And until now, my charm on text never fails me.
So, that event made me decided to retrieve my DMB discography, some of their albums and bootleg copies of their live performances. I imported them to my Winamp playlist and start to listen to the whole DMB parade.
And after almost two hours of listening, there are some songs that caught my attention due to some reasons, it’s either melancholic or the lyrics are superb, at times simple but full of message.
Majority of my new found top picks came from their album “Busted Stuff”.
Start with “Busted Stuff” ; a song about a man narrating his story and emotion on a recent break-up. He don’t have any plans to appeal to the woman but better think of what’s left for him after the divide.
My fave lines : “Not enough, never too much , The woman look just like love. Rolling stone gathers no moss. But leave a trail of busted stuff. I know she’s gonna leave my broken heart behind her . I take what she’s giving up”
“Grace is gone” : if you know their song “Crush” and “Bartender”, this one is like the prologue to those songs. Dave’s lyrics are absolutely tormented over losing someone, “I could never love again as much as I loved you.” The track accentuates the theme of resorting to alcohol for problems, “Excuse me please, one more drink. Could you make it strong ‘cause I need to think. She broke my heart, my grace is gone. Another drink and I’ll move on.”
“Grey Street” is the most acclaimed and popular track from this record, and rightfully so. The chorus, “When all the colors mixed together, to grey” is unforgettable and Dave is passionate as he’s ever been. The climax of the track is especially powerful, Leroi is ripping on his sax and Dave is utilizing his growl-like yell.
Well, btw , the “busted Stuff” album is the one who carried their mainstream flagship song “Where are you going”.
To cap off my DMB newfound faves is the song entitled “Pig”, a free-verse like song about hope and faith to an unknown tomorrow. And even though you had a hard time to accept mistakes, note it that, because of those mistakes you learned to have hope and faith in some aspects of life. Gibberesh though let a small pec of it’s lyrics tell it all :
“Come sister my brother .Shake up your bones shake up your feet . I’m saying open up. And let the rain come flooding in . Wash out this tired notion . That the best is yet to come . But while you’re dancing on the ground . Don’t think of when you’re gone . Love love love what more is there . Cuz we need the light of love in here . Don’t beat your head
Dry your eyes . Let the love in there . There are bad times. Well that’s ok . Just look for love in here. Just let the love in there.”
I think that’s great that my pallate adopts new song to its orphanage every moment I got time to search the net or bond with my new Winamp. so DMB geeks out there, recheck your DMB collections and rediscover the band’s hidden glory
Heartbreak World [right here where you want me]
Singing your [swollen] broken heart out in a locked room is really effective lessen the pain. It also do wonders from practicing your “shower” singing voice up to finding some advice from the song’s lyrics. It is good and advisable, yes, but I never had an idea that it would hit me. I am not prepared to deal with a broken heart, much worst, pick up a good playlist to heal my heart.
Until Two years ago, someone broke my heart, she didn’t care whether I can handle it , can survive through it, or –whatever, She don’t cares about me at all… The pain she gave taught me that not all the things good in sight can’t hurt you, well she did it DAMN “TERRIFYINGLY” GOOD!
Well, I must admit, I’m not good at handling my own feelings, showing it also was one of my problems.
My problems just mixed up, added by the breakup, equals two mild heart attacks. (Hell yeah, that’s true)
anyway, after that break up I just realized I needed some advice or comfort from a friend, from a brother—not from my parents, I’m not open regarding to this when it comes to them…it’s sleazy. After calling all my friends, I got a text message saying i must comfort myself anyhow by listening to some music new to me. He suggested to give this album a try. Besides, it’s college week, everyone are so busy to check one another, it’s hard by that time to get a friend to consult or share a beer with. My weak heart and disturbed mind followed that guy without any chance or attempt to rebut…And yes, he’s recommending Jessie McCartney.
Some ballad songs (take note: ballad) from this album taught me how a man accept heartbreaks as such many levels.
REJECTED B’COZ OF THE OTHER GUY : Just so you know
“It’s gettin’ hard to, Be around you, There’s so much I can’t say
Do you want me to hide the feelings, And look the other way
And I don’t know how to be fine when I’m not
‘Cause I don’t know how to make the feelings stop”
THE RELATIONSHIP IS GOING NOWHERE AND YOU SAW IT COMING
:Tell Her
“I can’t believe, Her hold on me, it’s somethin indescribable
I know she knows, But won’t you please
If you see my girl
Just tell her i miss her smile
Tell her I’m counting the minutes
Gonna see her in a little while
Cause I know when she
Holds onto me
She’s the one thing that i could never live without”
WANT TO END THE PAIN? : Just go
“You can’t walk back in my life, You had your chance to be by my side
I don’t have to hear you cry to know
Just go, I gave you my word and I promised to love you
Go, it’s over, You had your chance
Just go, There’s nothing inside me that still feels connected
To you to me you’re already gone”
YEAH I KNOW IT’S NOT EASY TO FORGET, WELL AT LEAST YOU TRIED: Can’t Let you Go
“So many times I’ve tried
To get her out of my life
But she knows I’m addicted
To the taste of her lips
My strength is drifting away
My body’s aching with pain
I can’t hold on
I can’t hold on any longer”
IN CASE YOU WANT TO REMINISCE THE PAST , WHEN YOUR WORLDS BECOME ONE— We Can Go Anywhere
“Breakdown, all the pressure that surrounds you
Allow, it all to fade away
We can, move on looking in the rearview mirror-
Wave goodbye, come on we’re leaving everything behind
You know that sun is shining
We’ll keep driving, doesn’t matter where
‘Cause we got that open highway leading our way
As long as you are there
Yeah, we can go anywhere”
I must admit, I didn’t expect that from his album , he’s too Disneyish when I first heard of him, It may not have made huge waves, but Jesse McCartney’s debut album, Beautiful Soul, was an undeniable hit, one of the biggest hits on the tween scene since Hilary Duff no longer belonged just to Radio Disney. McCartney filled the hole Duff left behind at Radio Disney, as his slick, sugary confections constantly played on that channel and on The Disney Channel, too. It set the stage perfectly for a mainstream crossover, just as Hilary Duff made serious inroads outside of the Disney community after her second album, and that’s what his 2006 sophomore effort, Right Where You Want Me, was designed to be. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite deliver on its intentions. Right Where You Want Me goes just a little bit too far in making McCartney into a mainstream star — rather, it goes a little bit too far in making McCartney mature, removing the snap from his bubblegum by giving him too many ballads to sing and too much production to sing through. He amiably gives it his all, yet the problem doesn’t lie with McCartney: it’s with the material and its presentation, which is too reserved for tweens, too kiddie for adult contemporary. So, it’s the equivalent of musical puberty: McCartney may be closing in on 20, but this finds him in his awkward phase where he’s not a boy yet not a man, and the record will only please those fans who are sticking by him through their own awkward phases. Fortunately, McCartney is enough of a showbiz pro that when he survives this transition, he’ll be able to come through and deliver a good third album that builds on the better sections of this record.
